Iran optimistic about future of relations with Saudi Arabia: Kanaani

Tehran (ISNA) – Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman, Nasser Kanaani pointed to the signing of a comprehensive strategic cooperation programme between Iran and Syria during Iranian President’s recent visit to Damascus, saying, “This programme consists of 30 clauses and is a roadmap for bilateral cooperation in various fields and can be an umbrella for the regulation of economic relations between the two countries”.

Speaking at a weekly press conference on Monday, Kanaani said, “President Ebrahim Raisi’s recent trip to Syria at this point has a special meaning, symbolizing a joint celebration of victory in the fight against terrorism. We also welcome Syria’s return to the Arab League and hope for increased regional cooperation”.

Elsewhere in his remarks, the spokesman pointed to the upcoming quadrilateral meeting between the foreign ministers of Iran, Russia, Syria, and Turkey, saying that Iran’s top diplomat Hossein Amir-Abdollahian will travel to Moscow to take part in the meeting. 

Regarding Iran’s cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and reports about the reinstallation of the Agency’s cameras, Kanaani stated that Iran is moving forward according to the roadmap agreed upon during IAEA director general Rafael Grossi’s visit to Tehran.

He affirmed that Iran has executable plans in place and is committed to progress its cooperation with the Agency.

Regarding Iran-Saudi Arabia relations, Kanaani said, “We have had good progress in the implementation of the agreement signed between Iran and Saudi Arabia with mediation of China, and political relations between the two countries are underway”.

“We are moving forward in the path of the agreement and we are optimistic that the agreed path will progress well thanks to the political will of both countries. We are optimistic about the future of bilateral relations between Iran and Saudi Arabia,” he added.

Answering a question about Iran’s decision to expel four Azerbaijani diplomats, the spokesperson confirmed that Iran had taken diplomatic measures against Azerbaijan in response to their non-constructive actions towards Iranian diplomats.

According to Kanaani, Four Azerbaijani diplomats, including two members of their embassy in Tehran and two members of their consulate in Tabriz, were expelled from Iran according to diplomatic protocols.
